The contents of the grocery bag combines moving images with contemporary dance and choreography. The camera, maneuvered by the artist, engages with improvised dance performances by collaborators Mako Kubeck, Kae Kubo, Mona Gamil and Hussam Jaduo that Allam invited to work on the project with him. The interaction between the moving body and the camera results in a collection of experimental scenes that do not follow a dramatic or narrative arc. Leaving space for each of the elements to unfold, this practice is closer to improvisation in experimental music or theatre than narrative film-making.
The coming together of the camera and the moving body takes place in locations that make up the third distinctive element of the project. Shot in Cairo and Tokyo, the idea of location in The contents of the grocery bag follows an interest in spaces where the movement of bodies is seemingly organised by an unwritten choreography. This includes workers operating machines in a metal workshop and a large printing house, the organisation of movement on busy streets in city centers or the “functionality” of minimal office spaces.
Similar to the way the movement of the bodies in the videos takes us through the spaces they are set in, the texts used inThe contents of the grocery bag take us to everyday scenes from short stories written by Hassan Elhalwagy. Though describing different situations they each observe moments of repetition or daily routine that oscillate between detailed attention to the act of performing a routine and the possibility of disruption.
The underlying current of The contents of the grocery bag is Allam’s interest in the practice of unscripted and experimental interactions between different disciplines that do not usually take place in the same space and at the same time. Moreover the film making, dancing and reading of literary texts are set in locations that are neither familiar to the performers nor established locations for the making or viewing of art. This bringing together of different artistic practices and locations, as well as the texts that point to the routines and patterns of life creates a space located in the in-between of repetition, the familiar and the possibility of deviation.

يمزج “محتويات كيس البقالة” بين الصورة المتحركة والرقص المعاصر والتصميم الحركي. تشتبك كاميرا علام مع الرقصات الشبه المرتجلة للمؤديات المتعاونات معه ماكو كوبيك، كاي كوبو، منى جميل وحسام جدعو على إنجاز العمل،من خلال ترك المساحة لكل من تلك العناصر في الانفراد والتمدد، تقترب ممارسة علام البصرية من الإرتجال في الموسيقى أو المسرح أكثر منها إلى صناعة الأفلام السردية.
بجانب الأداء الجسدي والكاميرا، تشكل أماكن تصوير الفيديوهات العنصر المميز الثالث للمشروع حيث يتتبع اختيارها فكرة أنها أماكن غالباً ما تنتظم بداخلها حركة الأجساد ، مثل انتظام حركة العمال في ورشة حديد أو مطبعة كبيرة أو الحركة المرورية لشوارع المدن المزدحمة أو “وظيفية” مكاتب العمل الصغيرة.
مثلما تأخذنا حركة الأجساد في الفيديو إلى تلك الأماكن مضبوطة الإيقاع، تعرض المادة النصية في “محتويات كيس البقالة” مشاهد يومية من قصص قصيرة كتبها حسن الحلوجي. ترصد قصص الحلوجي الروتيني واليومي وتتأرجح بين الانتباه الشديد إلى الفعل المتكرر وحضور إمكانية كسره.
يقع تحت سطح “محتويات كيس البقالة” اهتمام علام بالتفاعل الارتجالي والتجريبي الذي ينتج عن الجمع بين ممارسات فنية قلما تجتمع في ذات الأمكنة والوقت الواحد. يأتي الدمج بين ممارسات فنية وأماكن مختلفة بالإضافة إلى النصوص التي تشير إلى روتين وأنماط حياتية ليصنع فضاء يقع على هذا الحد الفاصل المتأرجح بين الروتين ولحظة اختلاله.
